But here is something which will work perfectly with my 28mm French Revolutionary armies.</p><p>Several years ago I purchased a music box biscuit tin for Christmas. It cost £5 and included a pack of shortbread biscuits. The Swiss mechanism plays, rather quaintly, DECK THE HALLS with Holly. With hindsight, it wasn't that great looking, and recently decided to get rid of it. Change of plan, decided to see if it could be converted into something more attractive. </p><p>Completed yesterday, here it is. I'm a lot happier with it, and the tin container can also store some walls, railings, and street lamps. And the music only adds to my old style 'Toyshop Atmosphere'.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjIRsjzHLoH1pOLKzLYi-650rMpTelARXwnUvuL3_L0Q2DlXHqvXdqPL_Otp0FXvJLwLf0RfIX2CHebShi2a6fsWN-NuldxIyZk1gPI8_xUbSOSXIv7wHuKEoCkOCXIpskdXHJu2Jc8tkFT-QKGNgbsdVUJ7bXd2XUaTOUWYVSbm4vGJusHMP_zufBB=s2592" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjIRsjzHLoH1pOLKzLYi-650rMpTelARXwnUvuL3_L0Q2DlXHqvXdqPL_Otp0FXvJLwLf0RfIX2CHebShi2a6fsWN-NuldxIyZk1gPI8_xUbSOSXIv7wHuKEoCkOCXIpskdXHJu2Jc8tkFT-QKGNgbsdVUJ7bXd2XUaTOUWYVSbm4vGJusHMP_zufBB=s320" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgIIFR0FHcasadvvTKLYXwm06s8NhRa-1GZ0Y6ux9gI0k0k5aih8CacTJcAQM9-zBI6YLWANYogDY9bPxEyg7aLBxZAEvC6TpJB1eZC3mFZPjLYDw6T5YyNKBbuvGUEG3YiE_3ZeRjS94NiUhj0Bj8pKFfJuhGUVKlgY0ugrCd92fgdRRtisTnxm9sP=s2592" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgIIFR0FHcasadvvTKLYXwm06s8NhRa-1GZ0Y6ux9gI0k0k5aih8CacTJcAQM9-zBI6YLWANYogDY9bPxEyg7aLBxZAEvC6TpJB1eZC3mFZPjLYDw6T5YyNKBbuvGUEG3YiE_3ZeRjS94NiUhj0Bj8pKFfJuhGUVKlgY0ugrCd92fgdRRtisTnxm9sP=s320" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjpb9fFfiBIaopalSWUmXeHcBqdOxoaR7Wt218ouFj2F550s_UVhVV9I3nTYppmSqTrezU3TEFsGCr1JjRB0_09onaoxDguin80JpOVdN_EQky4RpL0EsiwVCSiQUS7eghmA84Rx8gTpZpZ_tJVdYK-e8rLsYaY-HK38NPKGNn2eGw5x1LWhUzTcz7W=s2592" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjpb9fFfiBIaopalSWUmXeHcBqdOxoaR7Wt218ouFj2F550s_UVhVV9I3nTYppmSqTrezU3TEFsGCr1JjRB0_09onaoxDguin80JpOVdN_EQky4RpL0EsiwVCSiQUS7eghmA84Rx8gTpZpZ_tJVdYK-e8rLsYaY-HK38NPKGNn2eGw5x1LWhUzTcz7W=s320" width="240" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj_fStaQFmYAOSO2pCvbhNx4TYcuQ0_wtnA5IyCGMzCXtKLRYubVB1H0SVmO9yQGJY_EQ4vMIx2fgLL9h0pdOfiUQDKHwk4sjvWyvMqAGRDOXPpP8NczcX3IOaQRHvm_hiSslNB__435QU-mirEXxgsu_VrMpdUr7zYwfCDVZxquU0hNnGH1UvmFqrD=s2592" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj_fStaQFmYAOSO2pCvbhNx4TYcuQ0_wtnA5IyCGMzCXtKLRYubVB1H0SVmO9yQGJY_EQ4vMIx2fgLL9h0pdOfiUQDKHwk4sjvWyvMqAGRDOXPpP8NczcX3IOaQRHvm_hiSslNB__435QU-mirEXxgsu_VrMpdUr7zYwfCDVZxquU0hNnGH1UvmFqrD=s320" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEin5oAPTt0qRNsgDmAg2nDiWsFEIyb39RfMA3DJ6syVg9M587ikdv5wqcr7bQ66S9LaxWLEO5hNUtYJNihx6a_bxKDoQA9fKFaNNsAcdC-V89d4VvtGbpXinj5P_xSKyTLHvfFeHPhwDnpoV94JYiYJ7bCvRSPJhqkU7ou1ZHaKPadQOrC_7OB4EADZ=s1599" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1599" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEin5oAPTt0qRNsgDmAg2nDiWsFEIyb39RfMA3DJ6syVg9M587ikdv5wqcr7bQ66S9LaxWLEO5hNUtYJNihx6a_bxKDoQA9fKFaNNsAcdC-V89d4VvtGbpXinj5P_xSKyTLHvfFeHPhwDnpoV94JYiYJ7bCvRSPJhqkU7ou1ZHaKPadQOrC_7OB4EADZ=s320" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjmZ0GvdJE6vAJva3_t46VsPDVzgWgolKUmtnBMIIoa-RBB5b4H-FdJbkJLbwXRmLzUO6TTwVvb-EeUtk86g1LJ2QPtOt89VqPKwdEA7t48GCubsSH_6cRlhpt9OU4FsgSKh9zRgzDndrCOTh1G2kQmaJ0mbWG0c6e1SXV9nsSYL4EW2et0TJqgqLru=s1599" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1599" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjmZ0GvdJE6vAJva3_t46VsPDVzgWgolKUmtnBMIIoa-RBB5b4H-FdJbkJLbwXRmLzUO6TTwVvb-EeUtk86g1LJ2QPtOt89VqPKwdEA7t48GCubsSH_6cRlhpt9OU4FsgSKh9zRgzDndrCOTh1G2kQmaJ0mbWG0c6e1SXV9nsSYL4EW2et0TJqgqLru=s320" width="320" /></a></div>MGBMGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-58930624404621470332021-07-26T08:00:00.000-07:002021-07-26T08:00:54.197-07:00PASSING OF A FRIEND, JOHN TUCKEY<p>Just heard from a friend of mine that John Tuckey recently passed away, aged 88. I think its appropriate for me to remember him here. I started wargaming with John in the late 1980s, and continued to do so during the following twenty years. Among a certain generation, particularly those organising shows, he was a well known character. As a wing-commander, retired, he was every bit a no-nonsense, forthright sort of bloke, and he wasn't acting the part. I liked him, and others have said that when he mentioned my name, it was positive. I will take that as a strong compliment. I suspect many visitors to shows all over England from 1980 to 2010 will have seen his historical refights, always involving thousands of 28mm figures, and in all periods of history. Recently spotted a photo in a Featherstone book with a Tuckey game featured. He later staged his own wargames show at Marston-Magna, Somerset, and I was pleased to put on a game at most if not all his shows. In his last few years he sold his collections and re-embraced model railways, but on occasions we did still speak. He was a powerful character, a British patriot, and I'm sad to know he is no longer with us. RIP John.</p><p>Michael G. Its an earthenware model of an early industrial building. At a loss to understand why it was made, perhaps to hold an internal light? Its well crafted, and looks perfect with 28mm figures. Originally buff-coloured, I gave it a prime, and painted it in more realistic colours. I've also covered the original foliage with more authentic tree scatter material. Not bad for £4. </p><p>MGB</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ldSx5A30K5Y/X5xTuKKmltI/AAAAAAAACIk/D133fjq6g3IaZSJtNZKyOh8XTbggPrUaQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4833.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ldSx5A30K5Y/X5xTuKKmltI/AAAAAAAACIk/D133fjq6g3IaZSJtNZKyOh8XTbggPrUaQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4833.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4bxc8vl_TJ8/X5xTyW9CE9I/AAAAAAAACIo/fY0CcH5QJNUoZ84BhiFXMEbC9j9gccLVQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4834.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4bxc8vl_TJ8/X5xTyW9CE9I/AAAAAAAACIo/fY0CcH5QJNUoZ84BhiFXMEbC9j9gccLVQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4834.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-03zWTvTXHLc/X5xT2BaKn6I/AAAAAAAACIs/GddpasDIFCcBI23MQvXj0VDE2az9gpgpQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4835.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-03zWTvTXHLc/X5xT2BaKn6I/AAAAAAAACIs/GddpasDIFCcBI23MQvXj0VDE2az9gpgpQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4835.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DQHObJChkn0/X5xT6bfAvcI/AAAAAAAACIw/LfHx4Vm8TkkXN6YjOnEA38l2Vx3vVV-TACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4836.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DQHObJChkn0/X5xT6bfAvcI/AAAAAAAACIw/LfHx4Vm8TkkXN6YjOnEA38l2Vx3vVV-TACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4836.JPG" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>MGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-33015089593663467612020-10-05T07:29:00.000-07:002020-10-05T07:29:44.748-07:00Royal Navy Ship ready to Set Sail<p>This model had been laying dormant for about two years. The fragile plastic masts had broken off, the ship's wheel was out of scale, the guns were missing, the paintwork was poor. I was seriously thinking about converting it into a prison vessel, as it certainly wasn't seaworthy. Pleased I decided otherwise, the strong wooden masts, rigging and sails, and new paintwork has made this something I'm keen to use The RN Ensign was added today.</p><p>MGB</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SCiQxhdwSos/X3stDQNhKHI/AAAAAAAAB3M/98KfowTN3HEqMBc5PQBCh35qsXjaeKsfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4735.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SCiQxhdwSos/X3stDQNhKHI/AAAAAAAAB3M/98KfowTN3HEqMBc5PQBCh35qsXjaeKsfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4735.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ns0KSznMcI/X3stIKq8xFI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/zFTyUVW3maoKYSuP1VPJOj5X6Gn5jopfACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4736.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ns0KSznMcI/X3stIKq8xFI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/zFTyUVW3maoKYSuP1VPJOj5X6Gn5jopfACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4736.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4Ot6dF_0P0/X3stMiFkgII/AAAAAAAAB3U/IrV3-jkJEPsLd1Vk1oAmXZsBUGAfupJlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4737.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4Ot6dF_0P0/X3stMiFkgII/AAAAAAAAB3U/IrV3-jkJEPsLd1Vk1oAmXZsBUGAfupJlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4737.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WeshwMNDrKU/X3stR6axcTI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/YwZw0-L6RoQHuG2wLYCx4NHinvip0ABWgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4738.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WeshwMNDrKU/X3stR6axcTI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/YwZw0-L6RoQHuG2wLYCx4NHinvip0ABWgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4738.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>MGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-79465714592252215852020-10-02T23:07:00.000-07:002020-10-02T23:07:23.990-07:00WARGAMING WITH 54MM TOY SOLDIERS, a new blog<p>Have recently set up my third wargaming blog, devoted to larger scale figures. Some time last year I picked up a small treen pot for 50p in a charity shop. Thought I might be able to make something interesting out of it. Today I have de facto completed my Efim Nikonov submarine, originally designed in 1721. I point out it was only designed that year as it failed all its testing, and the Russian government scrapped its funding for this project. Hope you agree, however, if it had worked, it would have been a useful weapon against the Ottoman fleet operating in the Black Sea....... and I hope to find out soon! Set around the issues that caused the Spithead Mutiny in 1797, it lacks for nothing in its portrayal of a naval action against a French vessel. Starring Alec Guinness, Dirk Bogarde, Anthony Quayle, and many more fine British actors, nothing more needs to be said on that matter. I can confirm that the uniforms are not to be mocked, and particularly nice to see the Corps of Marines with 1796-7 coats, as it would have been far easier to supply them with just Napoleonic outfits from a theatre store. Do make an effort to find and view this film. REVENUE SERVICE GUNBOAT<p> As a follow-on to the last post on policing, my 18th century Revenue Service has been strengthened. I made this vessel out of plastic-card quite a few years ago but I was never quite happy with it. The masts and deck layout have now been improved, and it has acquired a fixed light cannon and four swivel guns. And the whole model has been repainted. </p><p>MGB</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PB4PhTBA-rA/X1YojOWN8lI/AAAAAAAABgM/rZko1AihItEM1_UOwjG1N6F0o2jhkunDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PB4PhTBA-rA/X1YojOWN8lI/AAAAAAAABgM/rZko1AihItEM1_UOwjG1N6F0o2jhkunDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4678.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E_HAquAviZc/X1YonwTovsI/AAAAAAAABgQ/diCNY5zBB2ArrFW8RAEBETpBE_6wg530wCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4677.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E_HAquAviZc/X1YonwTovsI/AAAAAAAABgQ/diCNY5zBB2ArrFW8RAEBETpBE_6wg530wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4677.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GAZQfxlBgwI/X1Yo685Q8fI/AAAAAAAABgg/wB5Me2285jgopoPPmStE3-ISyPIDrLr0gCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GAZQfxlBgwI/X1Yo685Q8fI/AAAAAAAABgg/wB5Me2285jgopoPPmStE3-ISyPIDrLr0gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMGP4676.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>MGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-40984486987405410942020-08-30T04:15:00.000-07:002020-08-30T04:15:29.820-07:0018TH CENTURY POLICE/GEORGIAN TOWN 28MM<p>Despite my recent absence from wargaming some general maintenance did take place to my Georgian town. Thought it was also time the civil authorities had some ability to keep the peace without having to call out the Local Volunteers. The foot police are Trent Miniatures, the mounted are some converted Hinchliffe figures. I include some photos of new wagons, and another of His Majesty King George the Third inspecting some vintage artillery, these old pieces may date back to the 1930s?, and they can still fire matchsticks. Hope my paintjob has given them new life. </p><p>MGB</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tywAb5VXBAk/X0uHgE3xW5I/AAAAAAAABfU/fSOGd6e9iRMvV3ewXUHFrxlsTNjCf7Z4wCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tywAb5VXBAk/X0uHgE3xW5I/AAAAAAAABfU/fSOGd6e9iRMvV3ewXUHFrxlsTNjCf7Z4wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMGP4663.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yQgC4IVxfyg/X0uHnchJwJI/AAAAAAAABfY/fryMFnfp79wVcirGyx7gZq-nL9IMNi67QCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yQgC4IVxfyg/X0uHnchJwJI/AAAAAAAABfY/fryMFnfp79wVcirGyx7gZq-nL9IMNi67QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMGP4664.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V9M8ixV3Acw/X0uHtulZ-MI/AAAAAAAABfc/TaF5sRsi1UQBlrDq14W5CNmeM4g9w_INACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4665.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V9M8ixV3Acw/X0uHtulZ-MI/AAAAAAAABfc/TaF5sRsi1UQBlrDq14W5CNmeM4g9w_INACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMGP4665.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Iqn5P_rWiDY/X0uIKZVPcsI/AAAAAAAABfs/ceNWO5A09T0d0qIsokN3vN20RVLHCr3KQCLcBGAsYHQ/s873/dray-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="332" data-original-width="873" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Iqn5P_rWiDY/X0uIKZVPcsI/AAAAAAAABfs/ceNWO5A09T0d0qIsokN3vN20RVLHCr3KQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/dray-3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X2Bz8QYo438/X0uIR-QvczI/AAAAAAAABfw/eWaR13MpB-MkPBceSCB5bfuENZo32zsoACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMGP4666.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X2Bz8QYo438/X0uIR-QvczI/AAAAAAAABfw/eWaR13MpB-MkPBceSCB5bfuENZo32zsoACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMGP4666.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>MGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-58829172769693297032020-08-22T06:48:00.000-07:002020-08-22T06:48:59.711-07:00APOLOGIES FOR MY LACK OF ACTIVITY<p> Late last year my kidney disease moved up a level and it became necessary to devote time and effort towards other issues. From about March this year my health seems to have improved. It is now my hope to return to posting on several blogs, and to increase the actual number of wargames I stage. Regards, MGB</p>MGBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00063536309395034188noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431453895356345142.post-18580115344633789622019-04-20T05:28:00.001-07:002019-04-20T05:28:08.049-07:00Wargaming the American Revolutionary WarFinally got round to playing an AWI wargame. It was a simple scenario, a British brigade was instructed to occupy/liberate a small town in New Jersey. A Royal Navy battery was in attendance, with instructions to open up a barrage on any 'key position' before the general advance. A dice determined four shots per gun, they would then cease firing. Although Rebel numbers, formed into two Continental, one partisan, and one militia brigade, gave them a numerical strength, their morale levels were considerably lower. The Naval battery inflicted some casualties on a prominent farmhouse but still failed to clear this location, This continued to be an irritation during this action. The British now advanced, opposition fire was initially light, but it did get heavier. The British kept their first volley in reserve, and relied on several bayonet charges. They were successful, the first line, largely broke. The second line, mainly Continentals, exchanged volleys with the Redcoats, with fairly equal losses. Wisely, the British Centre did not persist in its advance, seeking to rely on their Left wing to steadily advance. The Right Wing was largely inactive, the exchange of light field guns being ineffectual. But it was the charge of some Loyalist cavalry that shocked the game, the Continental light troops broke, and were severely chopped up by the slashing sabres. This gap in the Rebel lines allowed the cavalry to enter the town's main street, and this game concluded.<br />

Just before Christmas I started on a new project to raise, restore, and upgrade some 54mm Medieval armies, using the 1970s Herald Range of figures, produced by W. Britains. I have nearly completed some 300 Guelph and Ghibelline figures now, and have started to upload photos on my other blog, Scimitar and Crescent Wargames (see link on this page). I must express how much of a pleasure it has been to move to this larger scale, and to view and repair some figures I had in my childhood. Perhaps its also the less formal historical criteria in collecting these figures which has made it such a joy. Here's a few photos from my new/old collection. Hope they are still of some interest to the followers of this Late 18th Century Blog.<br />

It was a year ago that I picked up a wooden container in a charity shop for £1, and it was obvious the lid would be quite suitable for something eastern, and perfect for something Russian. The following photos are pretty well self-explanatory. The completed model is not really dateable as it has features from several periods in Russian history, but as it was my intention to not only capture my interest in the State of Muscovy, but also my love of Christmas, I don't think it matters. The green roof is inspired by a 17th century Russian palace, the dome is very 16th century, the yellow walls are 18th century, while the woodwork ornamentation is medieval. Together, they make a very colourful ornament on the war-games table. Additional costs were £3 for the yellow paint, and £2 for the glass taken from a broken lantern in a charity shop. With additional paint and glue it came to £7 total. Being pleased with the results, I took time to cast up some Orthodox Christian crosses. For the record, working on and off, I completed this project at 11.45am today, New Years Day. Hope you all had a great Christmas, and have a Happy New Year!<div>

The figures are mostly X-Range Hezzlewoods, with a few Fife & Drum and Crann Tara Miniatures. I'm now ready for a brigade level action.<br />

Have now used the moleskin to provide several ploughed fields and, again, the material really does sit well on the static grass tabletop. Also included in the photos below, a miniature Christmas tree picked up in a charity shop yesterday for £1. It came with some rather nice scaled-down decorations, and only required a quick paint job to its original white plastic base.<br />

Have just completed the light infantry, in their distinctive wide brimmed hats with green plume, band, and lace, recorded by contemporary sources. Next, the grenadiers.<br />

Commercial products are costly and often fail to provide a suitable flat surface for figures to cross over. Decided to use a piece of moleskin-cotton fabric I had in my store of cloth, which was uncannily the same colour as my brown bases. Chris (family/wargamer) felt it provided the answer but hardly looked anything special. So I decided to texture and seal the edges with wood glue and green static grass. But then I tested out some acrylic paint to create tracks on the roads, using brown, sand, and white combinations. To my pleasure, it not only soaked in perfectly but is totally permanent. What I also like about this material is that it stays snug and lays flat on the static grass covered board, no movement whatsoever. Did I mention the border edge is only 1mm high, and has little impact on multi-based figures. I'm very pleased with the results and have more than enough for any possible projects. The cloth was actually given to me by a lady friend in the trade.<br />

(ps. recently put together this home-cast cart and some odd wheels which fortunately were the same diameter, decided to make a small vignette............... I blame the roads lol.)<br />

Here we see this regiment, in their distinctive apple-green facings, being inspected by His Majesty, prior to joining the Allied army mustering to oppose the Revolutionary French. The figures are mainly home-castings with a few head-swaps.<br />

The officers are mainly French emigres, while the recruits are from several nationalities. This battalion will now move south to the border area, the British government having agreed to finance its formation.<br />

Here he is in a somewhat dated style of coat, and the popular wide-brimmed hat adopted by the Allied army while in the Low Countries. His regiment, the Loyal Emigrant, was well regarded and had a superb fighting record. Still clearing away items in my spares box, I thought something suitably Roman Catholic would not look out of place next to this officer (Well that is one less Christmas decoration lol.)<br />

Decided to cut up several wooden snowmen for tubs and pots. While some small conifer trees, costing 10 pence each, could be trimmed into other shrubs. As I have often admitted, I get a real pleasure in utilising the unwanted. Also picked up a second-hand lorry in a local toy shop for two quid, but it was the eleven medium sized barrels that caught my eye, and they have painted up quite nicely.<br />

However, as I like my wargaming to develop on a strict budget, and find particular pleasure in new uses for the discarded, or even household rubbish, it occurred to me that even a pile of sawdust from the newly cut bench slats might be painted, dried, and then applied to my homemade shrubbery. Having seen the price of commercial alternatives, mainly sold to the miniature railway enthusiasts, I'm quite pleased with the results. (And here is a photo of the restored bench, now that must be a first on a wargaming blog!)<br />

It is a ceramic rowboat, made by a company called Manor Ware, which unfortunately ceased trading in the late 1980s, typically making holiday souvenirs for coastal towns. Can't say what it originally cost but I paid £2, and a quick repaint job has furnished a nice little ornament for my war-games table.<br />
