Wargame Rules, Ratios, etc

RAISING MINIATURE ARMIES FOR THE LATE 18TH CENTURY

I am very keen to keep my wargame rules as simple as possible, yet capture the character of the 1790s. Morale dominates the games as the opposing sides are very different. Most of the French troops are 'levee' battalions, which I have chosen to base in column as their ability to change formation on a battlefield must have been limited, nor do I believe their volley fire had any great value. Of better quality, able to change formation, will be white-coated regular and blue-coated volunteer battalions, aided by a fair number of skirmishers. The British, Austrian, Dutch and German armies are often outnumbered, but they maintain the discipline and order of typical 18th century armed forces. Interestingly, French revolutionary cavalry have little in common with their later Napoleonic counterparts, the former are few in number, often poorly mounted, and no match for those in the service of the Allies. All figures are 28mm in scale, using a 1=25 ratio.

The Kingdom of Wittenberg Blog (Fiction)

This is a departure from my usual entries but I would like to promote it here. The Kingdom of Wittenberg is a blog about a fictitious 18th century state. Inspired by the Grant and Asquith wargame books of the 1970s, the figures are 25-40mm miniatures engaging in diplomacy, warfare and cultural aspects of the Georgian age. If you too like the period, need to be inspired to paint up those lead figures, and want some entertaining reading, visit this blog. If I may, make a point to start with the very beginning and work your way to the latest entry. An occasional smile is guaranteed! MGB

    1. Do that A.P. I found it interesting to see how his collection developed. But some of his ideas are also making me rethink how I could develop my hobby. I showed some photos from his blog to friends, all found them entertaining. My blog will remain rather more formal, but that's me!

    1. Have picked up some very old lead farm animals in an antique shop, I blame the King of Wittenberg for this!

    3. Allan, Not sure if this should be styled a State visit, or Foreign Tour? Anyhow, I will be looking at including some smaller scale actions, to include personalities. And a side listing of 18th century sites to visit.
